LAB TEST & PROCEDURES
Title : Potassium
Short Description : Blood test

Explanation of Test: This test evaluates fluid & electrolyte balance and identify renal dysfunction. Potassium is important in nerve conduction and muscular function. Together with sodium and chloride, it regulates acid base balance and osmotic pressure in the body. As our kidneys do not conserve potassium, it is important that there is adequate intake of potassium daily. Any changes in potassium level must be monitored closely as this change can suddenly prove lethal.

Reference range : adult: 3.3-4.9 mmol/L
Title : Prostate specific antigen
Short Description : Blood test.
Explanation of Test : This test helps to diagnose prostate cancer and monitor treatment of the disease. It is also useful as an indicator of early recurrence of prostate cancer. PSA is often tested together with alkaline phosphatase and prostatic acid phosphatase. Approximately 80% of prostate cancer patients show elevated PSA.
Reference range: adult: 0-4.0 g/L
Title : Protein, total
Short Description : Blood test.
Explanation of Test: Plasma proteins serve as a source of nutrition for the body and function in body buffering ability. Half the total proteins are albumin and the rest are globulin (see immunoglobulin) and other coagulation proteins. Elevated levels of protein may be indicative of dehydration, diabetic ketoacidosis, chronic infections and renal disease. Decreased levels may indicate malabsorption syndromes, renal and liver dysfunctions.
Reference range: adult: 62-82 g/L
