LAB TEST & PROCEDURES
Title : Phosphate, inorganic
Short Description : Blood test.

Explanation of Test: Phosphate is required for generation of bony tissues, energy production, maintenance of acid base as well as calcium balance and metabolism of carbohydrates and fats. Phosphate levels in the blood have an inverse relationship to calcium. An excess of one in the blood will cause the kidney to excrete the other. Elevated phosphate levels in the blood may indicate renal dysfunction and skeletal diseases. Decreased levels may indicate hyperthyroidism or rickets

Reference range: adult: 0.77-1.38 mmol/L
Title : Platelet count
Short Description : Blood test
Explanation of Test : Platelets are the smallest components of the blood and its activity is necessary for blood clotting. This test is useful in evaluation of bleeding disorders and in assessing effects of cancer treatment on platelet numbers. Patients with leukemia or dengue hemorrhagic fever may have platelet count below 50 X 109/L
Reference range: 140-440 X 109/L
Title : Porphyrins
Short Description : Urine test.
Explanation of Test : Porphyrins are used in the synthesis of hemoglobin in our body. These Porphyrins are eliminated from the body in the faeces and urine. In health, excretion of uroporphyrins is minimal but this amount rises during liver damage, lead poisoning, congenital porphyria and pellagra. Testing for presence of coproporphyrins and porphobilinogen is useful in classifying the various type of porphyria. Increased levels may indicate porphyrias, liver disease, lead poisoning and some cancers.
Reference range:
Uroporphyrins
male adult: 0-42 nmol/24 hours
Female adult: 1-26 nmol/24 hours
Coproporphyrins
male adult: 0-146 nmol/24 hours
Porphobilinogen 6.6-9 mmol/24 hours
