Title
: Alpha-1 antitrypsin |
Short
Description : Blood test. |
|
Description
:
Explanation of Test: AAT is produced
by the liver. Inherited deficiencies
of AAT is associated with lung
and liver disorders in which the
tissues are destroyed and replaced
with connective tissues. This
test screens for high risk of
emphysema and liver disease associated
with congenital absence of alpha-1
antitrypsin. AAT increases in
inflammatory conditions and therefore
is a useful detector of non-specific
inflammation. |
Reference range: adult: 85-400 mg/dL |
Title
: Alpha-feto protein |
Short
Description : Blood test. |
Description
:
Explanation of Test: This test
is used to screen for fetal anomalies
during pregnancy. In non-pregnant
patients, this test is used to
screen for liver cancer, hepatic
disease, inflammatory bowel diseases
and to monitor effects of cancer
treatment. AFP is produced by
the fetal yolk sac and later by
the liver cells. |
Reference
range: Males & non-pregnant
females: 0-10 g/L |

Title : Amylase |
Short
Description : Blood test. |
Explanation
of Test: Amylase is an enzyme
produced in the salivary glands
and pancreas. This test is used
to diagnose and monitor treatment
of acute pancreatitis and in detection
of inflammation of salivary glands.
Reference range: adult: 30-110

Title
: Aspartate transaminase |
Short
Description : Blood test. |
|
Explanation
of Test: AST is present in tissues
of high metabolic activity such
as heart, liver, kidney, skeletal
muscle, brain, pancreas, spleen
and lungs. Any disease affecting
these tissues will affect AST
level in the blood. Therefore
this test helps to determine
damage to the liver, heart or
musculoskeletal system. An increase
of 10 to 20 times normal may
indicate acute viral hepatitis,
mononucleosis, alcoholic cirrhosis,
extensive burns or musculoskeletal
trauma. In myocardial infarction,
AST may be increased 4 to 10
times the normal levels. Decreased
levels occur in Beriberi and
uncontrolled diabetes ketoacidosis.
This enzyme was formerly known
as Glutamate-oxaloacetate transaminase
(GOT). |
