Title : Bone & Joints: Uric Acid |
| Description :
Uric acid is formed from the breakdown of nuclei acids and is excreted by the kidneys. It has low solubility and tends to precipitate as uric acid crystals. High level of uric acid will lead to gout, a disease where uric acid crystals are deposited in tissues and joints, causing pain. High uric acid levels can also lead to kidney disease and formation of urinary stones. High protein diet and alcohol are known to increase the level of uric acid. |

Title : Breast self examination
|
Short Description : Medical Procedure |
|
Description :
This is a physical examination done on the 3rd day after the menstrual period has stopped. It is recommended that this be done every month. By doing this, one can be aware of unusual changes in the breast
The examination is done as follows:
1. Check your breast in front of the mirror for anything unusual, for example puckering, dimpling and scariness or discharge from nipples
2. Check for change in contour and shape by clasping your hands behind your head and press your hands forward. Next press your hand firmly on your hips and bend slightly toward the mirror as you pull your shoulders and elbows forward.
3. Look for discharge by squeezing your nipple gently.
4. With one arm raised, use the pad of your fingers of other hand to press the breast and surrounding area firmly and thoroughly to feel for lump or mass under the skin
|
Feel the tissue by pressing fingers in small overlapping areas about the size of a 20 cent coin. Do this in a methodical manner to ensure that you have covered the entire area
You may use the "circle" method, which involves starting at the outer edge and moving slowly round the whole breast in smaller and smaller circle, working towards the nipple. The "lines" method involves starting in the underarm and moving downwards until below the breast. Then move your fingers slightly toward the middle and slowly back upwards. The up and down checking is repeated until the entire area is covered.
The "wedges" method involves moving fingers toward the nipple and back to the edge.
It is important to repeat the step above while lying down flat on your back. Put one arm over your head and a pillow under the shoulder. This position flattens the breast for easier checking
If you notice a lump, a discharge or any other changes during the month, contact your doctor |
